Hyrum's First Day of School

Kayla and I have reached a milestone in parenthood: our oldest started school on Tuesday. Hyrum went to pre-school last year, but somehow it seems different now that he is embarking on the long and perilous journey of public school education. (Actually I wouldn't mind finding an alternative to public school for him, but our local options are limited).

I think Hyrum is ready for school. Kayla drove him the first day, and as they stood in line and the teacher said it was time to go in the classroom, he exlaimed "Oh I'm so excited!" Ah, if he only knew.... the next thirteen years would be spent getting up and doing that very same thing. I shouldn't laugh though, since by entering the adult world I have committed myself to at least thirty-five years of hard labor, without parole. Of course, I don't remember having a choice in the matter!

I think the person least happy with Hyrum's entry into the big scene was his little brother. Jeremiah is in full copy-cat mode at this point in his life, and without someone besides his mother to imitate, I think he's feeling a little neglected.

James--I appreciated your comment about Martin Buber and your thoughts about how his ideas might parallel your own about relationship. Basically, I think Buber is talking ( and I am , too ) about the moments when we transcend the moment--when b/c we were willing to trust the process of telling our side of "the truth", sometimes there is something bigger than the two of us as an outcome. So, miraculously ( I always am the pessimist about this ) the relationship or conversation or understanding move forward. Others that you might like based on your philosophy--maybe Bonhoeffer--( I wrote about him last month--his famous "Letters from Prison" are very interesting).
Hope to see you on the site again.
